No trip to Bali is complete without exploring some of the island’s utterly magical waterfalls. From Ubud to Munduk, the waterfalls of Bali are vastly different from one another.
Some are powerful and fast-flowing, others are tall, gentle cascades, and all are a showcase of the wonders of nature.

For tourists planning a day (or more) chasing waterfalls in Bali, it can be hard to narrow down which to choose. One that simply must be added to the itinerary is the ever-impressive, powerful Tegenungan Waterfall.
Located in Gianyar Regency, Tegenungan Waterfall actually goes by two names; it is also known as Blangsinga Waterfall. In Bahasa Indonesia, the word for waterfall is ‘Air Terjun’.
If you’re taking a solo moped ride around the more rural and inland communities of Bali, especially in Gianyar, Bangli, and Buleleng Regency, be sure to keep an eye out for small wooden signs painted with the words ‘Air Terjun’; you could be on the right path to finding the next best hidden gem!
Tegenungan Waterfall can be found in the Sukawati District of Gianyar Regency and is around a 30-minute drive from the centre of Ubud.
Since it is a very well-known natural landmark, all local taxi drivers and guides know where Tegenungan Waterfall is, so there is no risk of getting lost along the way. Be sure to bring cash as entry is IDR 15,000 – 20,000 per person and includes parking fees.
Without a doubt, Tegenungan Waterfall itself is magnificent and truly impressive, but those visiting are highly recommended to spend some time exploring the surrounding jungle too.
Serene, cool, and home to an inspiring variety of wild-growing plants and trees, this really is a haven for nature lovers. Tourists visiting Tegenungan Waterfall at any time of year are advised to wear sturdy shoes and to watch their footing.
While the paths and steps are well maintained, being located in the jungle means that steps are often wet and in places prone to lichen and moss that can be very slippery. There are handrails in place for good reason.
Tegenungan Waterfall is popular; there are no two ways about it, but there are easy ways to dodge the most crowded parts of the day. The waterfall is open from 6.30 am until 6.30 pm daily; as such, arriving super early in the morning almost guarantees that there will be hardly anyone around.
It’s also a good option to arrive way later in the afternoon, anytime after 4 pm, when day trippers have already started to make their journeys back to hotel hotspots like Ubud.

For those who are interested in Balinese culture, be sure to ask one of the Tegenungan Waterfall guides to share the story of Griya Niskala, the supernatural Hindu priest, who is believed to reside within the waterfall itself.
Located just 80m from the powerful water flow is Beji Tirta Merta Temple, known for its five holy water foundations. It is often visited by local worshippers to conduct a melukat ceremony.

A visit to Tegenungan Waterfall could take all day, or be ticked off in under an hour, depending on how quickly visitors want to move through their day.
There are plenty of attractions in the Tegenungan Waterfall area that, bundled together, make for a memorable and comprehensive day trip in Gianyar Regency.
For a little more nature immersion, tourists should check out the newly opened and nearby Kemenuh Monkey River Forest Park, or the gorgeous Kemenuh Butterfly Park.

For something a little different, check out the Glass Bridge, and for more chilled-out vibes, be sure to book a spot at Omma Dayclub, which directly overlooks the waterfall and surrounding jungle.

Tegenungan Waterfall is no longer a scenic waterfall but an overdeveloped tourist trap. Prove me wrong.
