Nusa Dua, in the south of Bali, is the island’s most luxurious resort area and is home to the highest concentration of five start holidays anywhere in the province.
Now, managers have confirmed that they are leveling up services for luxury-loving guests with a complimentary shuttle service that is also helping the environment.
As part of The Nusa Dua’s mission to support the development of a green ecosystem and smash emission reduction targets in the tourism sector, the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) has teamed up with the Indonesian Tourism Development (ITDC) to launch a pilot project using electric shuttle buses and electric motorbikes in the Nusa Dua area.
The new eco-initiative is a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding between IBC and tourism development company InJourney which was signed earlier this year. The MoU outlined a shared aim to accelerate the implementation of environmentally friendly operational vehicles in The Nusa Dua.
Speaking to the press, the IBC Director of Institutional and Commercial Relations, Reynaldi Istanto, explained that one of IBC’s roles is acceleration and market creation by building a green ecosystem in Indonesia so that emission reduction targets can be achieved.
This not only helps ensure that Bali’s leading tourism resorts are being managed in a sustainable way but also brings direct benefits to tourists. With less vehicle pollution, noise pollution, and vehicles operating in the area, the Nusa Dua will remain a peaceful and healthy space to retreat.
Istanto said, “Our task is to help achieve emission reduction targets in Indonesia, where in the tourism sector, ITDC is our partner in the application of electric vehicle use. Currently, IBC is preparing electric motorbikes with battery swapping stations and electric shuttle buses for operational tourism services in Nusa Dua.”
He confirmed that it is not only electric vehicles that will be introduced in The Nusa Dua as part of this collaboration. The new partnership will also be extended to other areas of the energy sector, such as energy storage systems for power backup needs and solar panels, e-buses, electric cars, and so on.
Istanto said that the use of operational vehicles in the form of electric motorbikes along with battery swapping stations and electric shuttle buses was the first step in his team’s committed efforts to support the tourism sector.
He added, “Of course, it will continue to be developed into other forms of energy so that the target of reducing 50 percent in the tourism sector can be achieved.”
While speaking to reporters about the electric bus services in Nusa Dua, the ITDC Operations Director Troy Warokka said The Nusa Dua is committed to sustainable tourism through utilizing environmentally friendly technology and resources.
He explained, “ITDC has implemented a green ecosystem program, including the use of electric motorbikes and solar energy in ITDC operations. Collaboration with IBC will also be increased for the use of more EVs and environmentally friendly energy with battery energy storage in the future.”
Warokka added, “It is hoped that this pilot project in the Nusa Dua area can drive the green tourism sector while gathering input regarding user experience so that the comfort of battery-based electric vehicle users can be increased, and ultimately a green ecosystem in the tourism sector can be built.”
The Nusa Dua is not the first to roll out the use of electric shuttle buses and shuttle carts in Bali. Dozens of 5-star hotels already offer guests complimentary shuttle services using electric vehicles, and these services are starting to be more widely introduced in leading tourism attractions, too.
Tourism managers at Jatiluwih Rice Terraces confirmed that they have just introduced an electric vehicle shuttle service so that tourists can more easily and enjoyably access the world-famous rice terraces from the car park and reception area of the attraction.

Electric vehicles in Bali are charged from electricity generated by coal fired steam power plants or diesel powered plants. Coal coming from e.g. Kalimantan by ravaging rainforests or other prime forests. So that is "green" energy for you.

I'm really happy that Bali hopefully will use these vehicles because it will free up some of the roads choked with cars and motor bikes. It will keep keep a lot of other transport off the roads Plus there will be I'm sure be many happy tourists.

@Caroline, I doubt it will have any of the effects you list. It will just replace petrol powered with EVs.
