Bali’s New International Hospital In Sanur On Track For Completion By End Of 2023

Officials in Bali have confirmed that the new Sanur Special Economic Zone, which will become home to a world-class international hospital, is on track for completion by the end of 2023. Officials are clear that the new medical facilities will be operational in early 2024.

Sanur Where The New International Hospital Will Be Located

The new Sanur Special Economic Zone is set to become a significant contributor to the provincial economy. Officials in Bali and across Indonesia are hopeful that the new medical infrastructure in Sanur will become a model project for other regions in the country.

Speaking earlier this month, the Chair of the Sanur Special Economic Zone council and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlannga Hartarto, said that the project is well on course. He said, “The hope is, of course, that this is a model that can be replicated in other places. We know that the number of our leading hospitals and health centers is still relatively limited.”

The new hospital and accompanying facilities are situated on 41.26 hectares of land. The concept is to position Bali as a world-leading health tourism destination. The international hospital will be completed to international standards as outlined by the Mayo Clinic and feature the best wellness facilities available. The hospital will be equipped with 250 inpatient beds and dedicated specialist faculties, including cardiology, neurology, critical illness (ICU), gastroenterology, and orthopedics.

The hospital grounds merge with the famous Bali Beach Grand Inna Hotel, a new meeting and exhibition center, and a living pharmacy featuring an ethnomedical botanical garden to draw upon traditional Balinese medical practices as complementary therapy to the modern practices within the hospital. There will also be a commercial center for health, wellness, and medical-related medium, small, and micro-enterprises to support the local economy further.

Hartarto told reporters, “this is the development of the first health SEZ in Indonesia. We can see behind that there is a hotel renovation and the hospital ahead, which is also targeted to be [opened] next year. Of course, this will change the health industry in Indonesia, where now there are not so many super specialist health industries available”.

The Coordinating Minster for the Economy confirmed that the Sanur International Hospital would bring in consultants from the Mayo Clinic. He concluded, “of course, it is hoped that this can add to the completeness of the tourism industry in Bali, and if their health gets first class, then the confidence of tourists will be even higher.”

Speaking separately at the “Challenges and Opportunites of Indonesia’s Medical Tourism” panel, the Director of PT Permian Bina Medika Indonesia Healthcare Cooperations, Dr. Mira Dyah Wahyuni said international doctors and doctors from the Indonesian diaspora who graduated abroad would be brought into the hospital.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor of Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Arcana Sukawai, who is also the Chairman of the Sanur Development Foundation and representative of the Bali Tourism Board. He told the audience that the whole project is being designed in partnership with the Mayo Clinic, the best hospital in the US. The partnership is developing not only the hospital building itself but working to create the best governance, management, and workplace culture possible.

He told the panel, “the aim is to position quality, safety, and patient experience at the highest international standards. So it is hoped that Indonesians no longer need to go abroad for treatment [either].”

Both Dr. Wahyuni and the Deputy Governor agreed that currently, legislation made it hard for doctors and other medical professionals who trained outside of Indonesia to come to work in the country. Dr. Wahyuni confirmed that the recruitment process is underway for specialist doctors and that only the best candidates will be chosen. She said, “we don’t limit anyone who is in accordance with the competence [we require], we will definitely [employ them]/ Whether from Bali, from Sanur, from Klungkung and from anywhere [else] we will definitely accept.”

I find it all hard to believe. Holidayed in Bali many times and spoke to many locals. I know that the Balinese have a very near impossible situation to be able to get care in a serious situation, they are expected to pay up front before entering a hospital, putting whole families in difficulty for years. Some are crippled for life, being unable to get care badly needed. How many years have we heard about the necessary new airport in north bali? And adequate rubbish removal from villages, I could go on and on. Bali people are told lies over and over, while the big shots live in luxury. Wish this report was all true

@Helen, The "new" Buleleng airport? never was anything more than a B/S election promise by Jero Wacik in 2007,to be fully operational by 2014 A Bali politicion who was later jailed for corruption, Not one shovel has gone in the ground and never will. The land sharks are still using the "Airport" and the promised "deep water harbour" for cruise ships B/S to sell land to mug Bule who believe it can be in a foreign name "LEGALLY"

Only Indonesia citizen doctors will work here . Cannot employ foreigner if the local has the same skill.

So no Chinese, Indian, American, German Doctors etc.

@Raymond,

Many Doctors from abroad have much better skills than those on Bali so can't imagine a work visa will be an issue to hire qualified Doctors,(if they are interested in coming to Bali to practice). Politicians will be relaxing visa requirements for these few Physicians I am sure.

The best healthcare for Indonesians is in Bangkok Thailand. Internationally renowned hospitals like Bumrungrad is the regions most acclaimed facility attracting clients from EU, North America , Africa , India and Middle East. There are many such resort class hospitals in Bangkok. Centers of excellence exist in Singapore, Japan Taiwan and South Korea. These private care hospitals have been in full operation for decades. Bali is in no position to compete other than exist as a day spa by comparison

Quote "...international doctors and doctors from the Indonesian diaspora who graduated abroad would be brought into the hospital."

"international doctors" (foreigners) are normally not allowed to work in Indonesia. So what is exactly the plan to bring in top qualified medical doctors?

@Exp, I am a Malaysian married to a Balinese Indonesian, I graduated Bachelors of Dental Surgery from Bangalore, India ( Malaysian government sponsored my education). I have KITAP, I am living in Bali and this will be my permanent home, but no plans on changing my citizenship to Indonesian. I contacted KKI and they sent me a thick file of Indonesian laws regarding foreigners unable to practice in medical field in Indonesia. This will only be possible if the laws are changed. It is a pity. In Malaysian Medical Council there's actually a separate section on the website for foreigners to register and practice ! I practiced with the Malaysian Health Ministry for 3 years before getting married and shifting to Bali. Wish there was some way I could practice dentistry here. :(
