Bali’s Most Famous Island Commits To Improving Tourist Safety And Ease

Share The Article

Bali is Indonesia’s flagship tourism destination. The province of Bali is comprised of Bali itself and the outlying islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

The outlying islands, which sit a 35-50-minute boat ride from the main island of Bali, are soaring in popularity with tourists right now. As demand rises, leaders are conscious that infrastructure must be leveled up to ensure tourists have the experience of a lifetime.

The province of Bali is governed by nine regencies. Nusa Penida falls within Klungkung Regency, the local government of which has just revealed they are intensively submitting proposals to the central government for essential funding to improve tourism infrastructure on the island.

Nusa Penida may only be a small island, but the landscape is home to many of the most iconic destinations Bali has to offer.

From the views over Kelingking Beach to Diamond Beach and Angels Billabong, there is so much to explore on Nusa Pendia.

This high season Nusa Penida has welcomed upwards of 5,000 people per day on the busiest days, averaging 2,500 a day.

As the island grapples with surging demand for tourism experiences, leaders are acutely aware that essential infrastructure like roads and utilities, as well as public safety instructors, must be invested to the same degree as tourism facilities like hotels, cafes, and attractions.

The Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, has confirmed to the public and to incoming tourists that Nusa Penida will receive the level of investment it deserves in order to maintain its place as a world-class destination.

Speaking to reporters Regent Suwirta said “This beautiful tourist destination, of course, there will still be something missing if the access road is badly damaged.”

“This will reduce the impression or interest of tourists coming here. The local government continues to try to handle both funds from the central, provincial, and district levels.”

As part of the Priority Destination for 2024 budget, Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan are set to receive funds to repair roads around Bias Munjul Port.

They will also fix up the Lembongan-Ceningan Bridge, as well as road repairs to better access the Tanjung Ental Beach, the Jungutbatu Road – Klatak T-junction, Jungutbatu Harbor – Sampalan Port, and Sampalan Road through to Puncak Mundi.

This is great news for tourists as road repairs mean that travel around the island is safer and quicker. With so much to see and do in Nusa Penida, no one wants to be wasting time in traffic or risking their life dodging potholes around oncoming traffic.

The Regency Government has said that the roads that run to and from major tourist attractions will be the top priority for repairs.

Perhaps even more excitingly, Regent Suwirta confirmed that he has been in contact with the Ministry of National Development Planning to discuss the prospect of Nusa Pendia being granted Geopark status.

This would enable the Regency Government to better protect the fragile ecosystems and natural landscapes of the island, in turn preserving the vistas and charming views that attract so many tourists to the area in the first place.

Much of Nusa Penida’s marine ecosystem is protected as part of the Penida Marine Protected Area program, which covers much of the waters around the three outlying islands.

The waters around Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan provide essential habitats for turtles, manta rays, sunfish, and many more endangered marine species.

A geopark status in Nusa Penida would help protect both the land and the sea.

Speaking separately, the Director of Regional Development of the Ministry of National Development Planning, Togu Pardede, confirmed that he is in communication with Regent Suwira.

It looks like the dialogue is moving forward in a positive way.

Pardede said, “I have seen firsthand the potential and beauty of Nusa Penida. We will certainly support this with access to financing from the central government and ministries through the ministry’s [special allocation] funds.”

Quote "The local authorities are intensively submitting proposals to the central government for essential funding to improve tourism infrastructure on the island."

My garbage has not been collected for a month here in South Denpasar! The same for all the neighbors villas with piles of garbage bags building up. Will this end with outbreak of diseases worse that a dirt poor african country. Can the authorities start focusing on the basic human needs like a working garbage collection and disposal system instead of all the endless promotional fluff.
