Bali Prepares For More Extreme Weather As Flights Delayed And Tourists Evacuated

It has been a wild week for the weather in Bali.

Though the sun has broken through the clouds in places over the last few days, the island is bracing for a few more days of heavy rains, extreme winds, and an increased risk of natural disaster.

The impact of Tropical Cyclone Seedling 96S has been devastating.

With wind speeds of up to 72km per hour recorded at weather stations in Bali, teams from the Disaster Management Agency have been working around the clock within the province to keep the public safe and mitigate as many potential risk points as possible.

Earlier this week flights were delayed and some were forced to complete a fly-around before landing at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport as wind speeds impacted flight safety.

The Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), confirmed that on Tuesday 11th February alone over IDR 885 million in damage was recorded, with the costs of rebuilding, clearing, and fixing damages set to rise.

Provincially, there were 40 major incidents recorded with fallen trees recorded between the 3rd – and 9th of February, resulting in the deaths of four people. The majority of cases were recorded in Gianyar Regency, close to Ubud, and in Tabanan Regency, best known for its landmarks like Tanah Lot Temple.

The Bali BPBD Secretary, Gede Agung Teja Bhusana Yadnya, spoke to reports about current clean-up missions and how the public must be prepared for more extreme weather in the coming days.

He appealed “As a joint effort in facing potential disasters, the Bali Provincial BPBD invites the entire community to increase preparedness and active roles in disaster mitigation. With the cooperation of all parties, we realize a safe and disaster-resilient Bali.”

On Wednesday 12th February, tourists in Sanur were evacuated by rubber dinghy after they were flooded into their accommodation. The tourists were trapped by rising flood waters and were assisted by BPBD Officers, who were able to tend to them immediately.

Officer Nyoman Gede Putra: “The condition of tourists at that time was no problem and in a good situation. The only possibility is that they are not comfortable in the villa so they need help to leave the villa.”

Tourists traveling through Bali’s domestic and international airport terminals are advised to monitor airline updates and the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport Instagram account. As a new weather front approaches the island, the potential for more flight delays is still high.

Shahab explained, “Regarding the extreme weather that occurred on the island of Bali in the past few days, a total of 15 flights were affected by the weather conditions at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport between 10-12 February 2025.”

Flights affected were mostly domestic services. Shahab shared, “The flight that experienced delays was Wings Air on the Denpasar-Lombok route. Meanwhile, the flight that experienced diversion was Lion Air on the Semarang route that was supposed to land in Denpasar diverted to Surabaya, and one charter flight on the Bundi-Denpasar route diverted to land in Lombok, the flight that experienced go around was Air Asia on the Jakarta (CGK)-Denpasar route.”
