Bali Police Conduct Spot Checks On Tourists Driving Mopeds

Share The Article

Police in Bali are conducting spot checks on motorcycle drivers, including tourists, in the island’s busiest resort areas.

The spot checks are underway to ensure that drivers have the correct licenses and that vehicles are in roadworthy condition.

The first round of spot checks was completed in the North Kuta area, with police based at strategic locations throughout the area. Police have already checked dozens of vehicles to help prevent crime and traffic violations.

The spot check operation was led by North Kuta Police Chief AKP Yusuf Dwi Admodjo, in partnership with AKP Deputy Police Chief Nyoman Juita, North Kuta Police personnel, and was carried out in front of the Canggu Village LPD and Canggu-Tibubeneng Shortcut Road.

Speaking to reporters, the Police Chief explained that this operation aims to prevent crimes such as aggravated theft, known in Bali as curate, violent theft, referred to as curas, and motor vehicle theft.

This is in addition to traffic violations by foreign nationals in the area. AKP Admodjo said, “We carry out selective inspections of two-wheeled vehicles at these locations, especially people, goods, and motorized vehicles.”

He noted that he and his teams were concerned that there were still many motorbike riders who were not compliant with the local traffic laws when riding motorcycles.

Violations such as not wearing helmets, riding with more than two people, and not having complete vehicle permits were found to be the most common reasons for pulling people over.

AKP Admodjo explained to reporters that this spot-check operation is not only aimed at finding errors or violations but also as an anticipatory measure against crimes and traffic violations. He added, “This activity is part of our efforts to maintain security and order in the North Kuta area.”

A similar operation has also been carried out in West Denpasar, where officers have confiscated ten motorcycles based on a range of violations.

West Denpasar Police Chief Commissioner Laksmi Trisnadewi explained the patrol in the city aims to take action against motorized vehicles that do not comply with standard specifications and are being driven without documents.

He explained, “We also remind the public, especially young people, not to gather late at night to prevent disturbances and criminal acts.”

He confirmed, “Ten motorbikes were confiscated for violating the rules. It is hoped that this activity can strengthen security and order in the West Denpasar area.”

Ultimately, these checks, whether they involve pulling over tourists or local residents, are a way in which police and traffic authorities can make Bali’s increasingly treacherous roads safer.

In late 2023, it was revealed that Bali Province saw the second-highest number of serious traffic collisions in Indonesia, second only to East Kalimantan.

With deaths on Bali’s roads occurring multiple times a week, and in some periods, even on a daily basis, leaders and communities want to see the roads become safer for all people.

The seriousness of the situation can be assessed by the huge number of tourists who end up with life-threatening or life-changing injuries as a result of collisions on Bali’s roads.

Car-in-a-Crash

On Sunday, 18th August, Perth-based tourist Shane Ramsey was critically injured in a traffic collision while driving a motorcycle in Seminyak. Ramsey is said to have ‘struck a pole’ while driving to a UFC, even in the tourism hotspot on Sunday evening.

He is currently in intensive care with a fractured skull, brain damage, and bleeding in his lungs. Ramsey had traveled to Bali to celebrate a friend’s wedding, and according to loved ones, his future remains uncertain as doctors wait for him to wake up from his coma before they can accurately assess the brain damage he has experienced.

Great, check the tourists on whether they actually have a Motor Cycle License, the majority do not. Save a few 'go fund me' rounds from tourists getting injured with insurance not covering them (if they have insurance)

@Dman, or beer money time like this incredible nice officer from an old youtube classic. How anyone can be angry at the Balinese police is beyond me.

"100k for my beer and 100k for gov."

Its ironic.

The police get criticised for not actively enforcing traffic laws, then get slagged when they do.

The old chestnut of 'us and them' gets another outing from the usual whingeing bules.

Next time you ride or drive though a check point check out the number of locals v expats/tourists being checked.

Dig a little further and see to whom the overwhelming number of infringements and bike impoundments were given.

The check point sites weren't chosen because of the high bule numbers, but for the volume of traffic.

We're guests in this country. Our obligation is to respect their laws.

The 'everyone else' defense is not just a cop out but arrogant.

Think about it...you're up for PCI in Sydney and your defence is other people have driven while drunk and not penalised.

Enjoy your suspension. Realise your ticket has been quite rightly marked.

@Shorty, your response shows the lack of IQ from your part. Read my comment again and try to understand the meaning of it. Hint: it has nothing to do with me.

@Sven,

You're aware you maybe targeted. If you are obeying the rules so what? If you chose to ignore them wear the consequences without whingeing.

@Shorty, laws are something that apply to everyone. In Sydney everyone would get a ticket, not just foreigners.

Given the number of local children on loud bikes among million other infringements that so many have complained about for many years, shows that Bali does not have laws.

Thus, foreigners have every right to complain. If they must follow laws then must everyone else also. Otherwise you can take your laws and shove them high up in your rectum.

During pandemic when there were little to no foreigners, there was no police to be seen (I was there during that time and for 2 years didn't see a single officer on the roads). That showed again how the law only comes out when foreigners are around.

It's utterly corrupt place, less civilized than some lawless African countries.

Any spot checks or policing of all the underage unlicensed helmetless school kids riding around Bali. Come and witness the unhinged joyriding on loud modified motor bikes in the Kedungu/Tanah Lot/Tabanan areas. Boys hooning around with no accountability and racing like they're at Mandalika. Never see Polisi around and the local pecalang do not give a rats neither the local parents. But let's pick on tourists coz they can pay. What a joke. Laws of the jungle.

@Thommo, "Come and witness the unhinged joyriding on loud modified motor bikes in the Kedungu/Tanah Lot/Tabanan areas."

It is everywhere. I guess Bali police will just laugh off foreigners when complaining about this craziness as nothing serious is done. They only serious action taken in Sanur was after the noisy motorbikes started to disturbed a local polisi station. "Cannot nap with all this noise."

Bali Police Conduct Spot Checks On Tourists Driving Mopeds

This crap just pisses me off!!!!! Lets just screw with the tourist or the hand that feeds the island.Without tourist this island will be the same as Sumba where people are uneducated and very poor. Lets start with why tourist are driving mopeds because there are no sidewalks and traffic is some of the wrost in the world. Lets screw with the tourist and let every load motorbike continue to drive down the street. Tourist with big money DO NOT COME TO PLACES with no laws just to sit in traffic and listen to all the super load motorbikes thinking they are MOTO GP drivers. It is high time that the police get off their asses and do their jobs by making Bali a peaceful place to visit. I could go on to bitch about all the problems here but why bother. I people running the show do not give a shit about anything but how much money they can put in their pockets. It is so sad here now having been here for 39 years now and seeing the place go down the drain. I feel so bad for the people of Bali some of the nicest people in the world. The cost of buying a small piece of land is imposable for them because not only Bule buying up the land but also rich indonesians. Bali should be for the people of Bali. After 39 years here I am packing my stuff and leaving asap.

@JR, It's simple. You know as a bule you could be targeted. If you're stupid enough to ignore the traffic regs you deserve to get caught.

@Nyoman, if you are real Balinese, then your reply should be paid attention by many foreigners.

Telling someone who has lived in Bali 39 years to leave and go home really shows the real colors of the local people.

What do you think you would win from a situation where long term foreigners who care about Bali leave, and be replaced by some short time party tourists? Answer is, nothing.

Today it seems that foreigners have much much more care about Bali than the locals themselves.

Instead of inviting respectful and supportive foreigners to Bali, you keep repeating like a child 'go home if you don't like it'. And later complaining that only have low quality tourists who are drunk and making problems.

Somehow not being able to see this very simple connection between these behaviors, really shows the level of intelligence and lack of thinking in Bali.

If this 'go home we don't want you' mentality continues, I will guarantee you that Bali will not be in anyone's travel list in the future. Lot of people are already having negative views about it and cautioning others to go there. You don't see this sentiment inside Bali since information is outside in rest of the world.

The current surge in high number of tourists is just a momentum from the past, which will reverse in upcoming years.

Bali is living on borrowed time and the end is getting closer with each year. Your incompetence, arrogance and greed is accelerating this process.

@JR, bye bye crying baby boy, we don't care if you stay or leave. Enough old grumpy foreigners already here in Bali. Yes, pack your backpack and leave, selamat jalan!
