Bali Pivots Approach To Attract More Tourists In 2026

Bali is one of the most adaptable tourism destinations in the world. As a travel destination, Bali is one of the most responsive to trends and keen to deliver.

This capacity to pivot and change at a moment’s notice is one of the many reasons why the island is the number one travel destination in the world in 2026.

Bali is the number one travel destination in the world for 2026, as named by TripAdvisor, and us here at The Bali Sun, but we’ll admit we’re biased on that one!

As the world responds to the conflict in the Middle East and its impact on oil prices, which affects the cost of just about everything, and the impact on travel routes around the world, Bali is already thinking ahead.

With the island targeting to welcome more than 7.5 million international visitors in 2026, the risk that the conflict in the Middle East could impact the number of arrivals is not one that leaders in Bali are prepared to take lying down.

Tourism and travel leaders in Bali are now planning to pivot their focus to invite a broader demographic of tourists and holidaymakers to the island.

The Bali Travel Agencies Association (ASITA) is targeting more international tourist visits from Central Asia, such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, amid the changing dynamics of conflict in the Middle East.

The Chairman of ASITA, Putu Winastra, spoke to reporters to explain the potential benefits of taking a broader approach during this period of heightened global geopolitical instability.

He explained, “Several Asian countries actually have the potential to attract many visitors to Bali. Central Asia, such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, has enormous potential. I happen to be the Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan, and the potential is extraordinary.”

Tourist visits from Central Asia to Southeast Asia are growing year on year. In the last 12 months, 300,000 foreign tourists from Kazakhstan chose to vacation in Thailand and Vietnam, while only around 20,000 visit Indonesia, particularly Bali.

Connectivity between Central Asia and Southeast Asia is improving, particularly between major travel hubs like Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.

Winastra told reporters that he feels that the Indonesian government is currently adopting a short-term strategy by attracting foreign tourists from nearby Asia-Pacific regions. As the Chairman of ASITA Bali, he believes there is potential that can be pursued in the Central Asia region, too.

He told reporters, “This is our hope, so we are always coordinating with the ministry to ensure this potential market niche can be truly explored and direct flights, or at least commercial flights, can be established.”

Adding “We are currently exploring this with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism to make this possible.”

The creation of more flight links between Bali and Central Asia would create more travel opportunities for travelers of all kinds. Not only would it create more travel options for holidaymakers in Central Asia and Indonesia, but also for long-haul travellers and backpackers too.

Bali is on a mission to become a major international travel hub like Singapore or Bangkok, serving both as a gateway to the Indonesian archipelago and as a layover destination for holidaymakers and business travelers en-route around the world.

In fact, when the conflict in the Middle East broke out last month, leaving millions of air passengers stranded as a result of of airspace closures, leaders in Bali were hopeful that I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport could step up as an alternative layover destination for travlers on long haul flights, which would in term bring a new wave of tourists to explore Bali.

All of this is to say that tourists who are planning trips to Bali in 2026 can be on the lookout for a whole host of different travel deals.

Our advice here at The Bali Sun is to look for deals in unsuspecting places. It could be that flying an alternative route, or by looking for travel deals from different providers, could result in savings and discounts.
