Bali Governor Admits That Tourism Hasn’t Been Benefiting The Locals Like It Should

Share The Article

The Bali Governor has admitted that the tourism sector has not been benefiting local people on Bali island.

Bali Governor, I Wayan Koster recently claimed that the Bali tourism industry has only benefited investors from the outside, rather than contributing to the local economy of the island in general. “The majority of our local people haven’t really received the benefit from our tourism sector by far. It has been only generating revenue for outside investors.” Koster said on Monday (11/10).

Koster explained that this Covid-19 pandemic has taught Bali a lesson to stop relying on the tourism sector as the main source of income for the majority of Bali’s population. “Our tourism sector has been contributing around 55% to our economy, while the tourism itself was proven to be very vulnerable. So we keep on evaluating this problem to avoid the same mistake in the future.” Koster added.

He also said that the provincial government has been preparing a new concept that would help Bali generate another source of income by utilizing local resources. “We will try to explore more of our local resources such as cultural based handicraft, our marine resources as well as our micro and small businesses to provide sustainability for our people, while tourism to be lower on the scale in the future.” Koster concluded.

How could a governor said something like that? Is he trying to create hatred between locals and investors from outside Bali?

The governor should learn more about basic economy. Bali neeeds outside investors to grow and only a provocator would say that the locals do not benefit from the tourism industry.

I wonder what the motive of the governer is.

Perhaps there is widespread corruption or just a gross mismanagement of their tourist industry. Case in point. How do you reopen to 19 countries but not coordinate with international carriers to schedule direct flights into Bali? And quarantining of vaxxed and also negative tested pax is not going to work. There are other destinations without these restrictions.

"The tourism itself has proven vulnerable... to mismanagement by the Governor of Bali"

In many other places, like Mexico, for example, tourism thrived in both 2020 and 2021. It created higher wages for the local workers and profits for the businesses owners and investors, local and foreign alike.
