Bali is coming to terms with the staggering impact of fires that have broken out across the island in the last 48 hours.
On Sunday evening, a devastating fire ripped through the popular restaurant Chez Gado Gado in Seminyak; on Monday night into the early hours of Tuesday, another fire broke out across Kuta.
The Badung Fire and Rescue Service (Damkar) has confirmed that officers needed more than two hours to extinguish the fire that burned down the Chez Gado-Gado Restaurant on Jalan Camplung Tanduk in Seminyak on 30th August 2026.
Badung Fire and Rescue Service arrived on the scene within minutes of the call coming in. The extinguishing efforts lasted for 2 hours and 40 minutes and required the deployment of ten fire trucks.
The fire was reported at around 7.40 pm. Badung firefighters moved two minutes after receiving the report and arrived at the location at around 7.50 pm. Upon arrival, officers began extinguishing and controlling the fire to prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. However, within minutes, the place had been engulfed in flames.
Speaking to reporters, the Head of the Badung Regency Fire and Rescue Service, D Ngurah Bhayudewa, shared, “In handling the situation, 10 fire trucks were deployed. The fleet came from five posts, two each from the Main Post, Kunti Post, Majapahit Post, Dalung Post, and Mengwi Post.”
The sheer size of the blaze required officers to use a significant amount of water. During the extinguishing process, officers used an estimated 115,000 liters of water to tame the fire and ensure no further hotspots could reignite. In addition to extinguishing the fire, officers also secured the area around the location.
The disaster mitigation response involved personnel from the Fire Department, PLN (State Electricity Company), police, security, and the community. He explained that the restaurant building that caught fire was approximately 45 meters x 40 meters and has been completely destroyed. However, officers managed to save the office building on the south side.
Bhayudewa told reporters, “The assets that were successfully secured are estimated to be worth around Rp 700 million.” He confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident.”
“As a result of the fire, material losses are temporarily estimated at around IDR 4 billion. Regarding the cause of the fire, Ngurah Bhayudewa said it is still under investigation.
The Head of Public Relations of Denpasar Police, First Inspector I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, told reporters on Monday that an investigation will take place, but initial reports on the cause of the fire are consistent.
He shared, “According to statements from witnesses at the location, the fire is strongly suspected to have started from a helium balloon that was hit by a candle flame, causing it to explode and catch fire.”
He added, “Initial extinguishing efforts using fire extinguishers by restaurant staff were unsuccessful because the fire had already grown large and spread quickly to the thatched roof.”
Speaking separately, the Head of Seminyak Village, I Putu Gede Adhi Karmita Putra, explained that, according to information he received, the restaurant was quite busy at the time of the incident. “Regarding the exact cause, there is no official information yet,” he said.
Nevertheless, he appealed to businesses to increase their vigilance against the potential for similar incidents during this dry season, especially businesses that use flammable materials such as thatch or host candlelit dinners. He added, “In addition, entrepreneurs are also expected to pay more attention to their respective electrical installations to anticipate the potential for short circuits.”
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Badung Fire and Rescue Service was called to respond to a second major incident in less than 48-hours. A major fire broke out on Jalan Sunset in Kuta, at the heart of Bali’s most famous tourist resort area. Drone footage shows a fire ripping through a large area, though neither Bali Police nor the Badung Fire and Rescue Service has issued a statement on the suspected cause of the blaze.
