Tourists traveling to Bali are always on the lookout for souvenirs to take home. As an island of artisans and craftspeople, Bali has plenty of souvenir options for tourists to choose from, from artwork to woodcrafts, from traditional cloth to candles.
One type of souvenir is becoming increasingly popular among tourists to Bali for its authenticity, affordability, and practicality.

Many tourists visiting Bali will stop by one of the island’s many art markets. The art markets are filled to the brim with trinkets and treasures for tourists to take home. It is rare, however, to find a local person shopping at the art markets. For tourists wondering where locals shop and even find gifts, the answer is simple: the food markets.
Even in tourist capital Ubud, the traditional local morning market still lines the streets from the early hours of the day. The market disappears without a trace by 8 am, meaning most tourists have no idea that the stallholders have even been there by the time they come out to enjoy a day of sightseeing.
This is true of almost every community in Bali. The early morning market is part of the traditional way of life. Most families still buy all of their fresh produce from a morning market and will buy fresh produce for a couple of days at a time. Items like rice, noodles, eggs, and cooking oil are more often purchased in bulk once or twice a month by the average household in Bali.
While the early morning markets, whether in Ubud, Denpasar, or Legian, are rightly catered towards local people, there is plenty for tourists to explore too. For the most part, airlines and customs do not allow travelers to fly with fresh produce, but tourists can take home dried goods like spices.
Indonesia is famed for its spices, and it is those fresh wafts of aromatics on the early morning breeze that have been romanticized by foreigners visiting Bali for over 100 years.
Tourists who take part in a traditional cooking class while on vacation are always keen to make sure they can recreate those authentic flavors once they get home. The only way to guarantee success is to get the spices right from the source!
Local market vendor Komang Sutrisna, who has a stall at Badung Market, spoke to reporters about the increasing number of tourists visiting the food market.
He told reporters, “They’re mostly looking for spices, especially powdered ones. Like vanilla, chili powder, and so on.” Sutrisna is expecting to welcome more international visitors to the market during the peak vacation season in June, July, and August.
He noted how tourists visiting Badung Market in Denpasar often also head over to the Kumbasari Art Market, which sits next door, to look for arty souvenirs to take home too.

According to data from Badung Market, in 2025, 16,930 international visitors explored the stalls, and it looks like the market will surpass that figure by the end of the year.
Badung Market is the biggest market in Denpasar, and shoppers will be able to find everything from fresh produce to bedding, books, home decor, clothing, and more. Most people, however, come to Badung Market for the food produce.

Badung Market, like most markets, is busiest in the morning, but technically, this place operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There is often music in the street food area of an evening, and it’s a great place to be if you want to soak up authentic nightlife in Bali.
Here at The Bali Sun, we find that a trip to Badung Market makes the perfect start to a day trip exploring Denpasar. Starting out in Badung Market, then heading over to Kumbasari Art Market, before walking down the historic Jalan Gajah Mada.

Denpasar is home to some of the best coffee shops in all of Bali, including NADHI Heritage, The Ruum Coffee, and Rumah Momo. All of these coffee spots make for the perfect punctuation marks of a day exploring Denpasar. Top cultural attractions and landmarks in Denpasar include the Bajra Sandi Monument, Kertalangu Cultural Village, and Werdhi Buddha Art Centre.
