The Bali Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency have confirmed that Cyclone Seedling 91S which is forming in Southern Java will have an impact on the weather in Bali in the coming days.
As the monsoon season comes to a close, tourists and local communities have been warned to expect some pretty wild weather!

The Head of the Bali Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Cahyo Nguroho, told reporters on Monday 17th March, “Be aware of the potential for rain accompanies by lighting and strong winds of short duration in the western and central parts of Bali.”
For context, all of Bali’s major tourism resorts sit within the centre, and central south of Bali: Uluwatu, Nusa Dua, Sanur, Jimbaran, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, and Ubud.
Cyclone Seedling 91S is currently located to the south of West Java and has a low to moderate potential to become a full tropical cyclone in the next 24-72 hours.
In addition to Cyclone Seedling 91S, the Madden Julian Oscillation, which is a non-seasonal oscillation wave is also sitting in quadrant II, which means it is also contributing to the formation of heavy rain clouds over Indonesia.
These two factors, coupled with the current wind convergence pattern over Bali mean that heavy rain clouds will be in the air.
The weather warnings are especially important for tourists and tour operators who will be spending time along Bali’s coast and at sea over the next 3 days.
Nugroho told reporters that high waves, upwards of 2.5 meters are predicted across the southern waters of Bali, and the Lombok Straight.
This means fast boat services between Sanur, Padangbai and the Nusa Islands, Gili Islands, and Lombok may be even bumpier than usual.
Nguroho told the media “Fishing communities and marine tourism operators should be aware of the potential for high waves.”
He added “Coastal communities are advised to be aware of the possibility of abrasion and large waves crashing on the shoreline. Continue to monitor the latest information from BMKG, especially early warnings related to weather conditions and sea waves.”
Nguroho has also urged the public to be vigilant for the potential for natural disasters triggered by the extreme weather, ranging from flooding to landslides to fallen trees.

The updates issued by the Bali Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency on Monday 17th March are a continuation of weather warnings issued to the public last week regarding the end of monsoon seasons.
The 2024/5 rainy season has been one of the most devastating in recent history. As the seasons are changing, climatologists are warning that the weather may be even more volatile over the next couple of weeks.
Speaking to reporters last week the Head of the Bali Climatology Station, Aminudin Al Roniri, explained “The beginning of the dry season in Bali is predicted to occur at the earliest in mid to late March, namely in the Nusa Penida area, then the last to enter the dry season is the central Bali region, which is in mid-May.”

He issued clear instructions to tourists in terms of what to look out for while they are enjoying their vacation time.
Roniri explained “What needs to be watched out for in the transition season is the potential for extreme weather such as heavy rains that occur in a short and sudden time, which can be accompanied by strong winds and lightning.”

It is advisable for tourists and travelers to have a weather app installed on their phones to see hour-by-hour weather forecasts. However, for local weather warnings and updates issued by the Bali Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency, it is best to follow @BMKGBali on Instagram.
Though most updates are issued in Indonesia, Instagram provides automated translations and the BMKG publishes tourist weather forecasts in English every few days.
