When we think about wine-producing regions, France, Argentina, South Africa, and New Zealand are among the first places to spring to mind.

If someone told you that some of Asia’s best wines are produced in Bali, would you believe them?

The island best known for its production of rice, coffee, and oranges is,, in fact,, attracting the attention of international sommeliers and wine-loving tourists.

Wine tasting tours and wine tourism in Bali is going to be hot topic in 2025, with a number of vineyards on the island welcoming tourists to come and experience their wine production processes and to explore a less visited side of the island, tourists seeking something a little different on their next Bali vacation would be wise to simple add ‘wine’ to their itinerary.

Bali’s best-known wine producer, Hatten Wines, is the province’s original winery, founded in 1994 by Ida Bagus Rai Budarsa. Hatten Wines cultivates evergreen vines that produce fruits year-round, this results in non-vintage wines that are reflective of Bali’s unique tropical climate and volcanic soils.

The vineyards, located in North Bali, started out producing Bali’s heritage grape variety, Alphonse Lavallée, which is used to create a rosé wine. Fast forward to 2025, and Hatten Wines is now producing an award-winning range of ten wines that highlight heritage Balinese grapes and international varieties.

Hatten Wines explains, “We process 1000 tonnes of grapes per year, all grown in our North Bali vineyards and vinified, matured, and bottled at our state-of-the-art winery in Sanur, South Bali. Our approach blends modern winemaking practices with time-honored French techniques to ensure consistency of style and quality from harvest to harvest.”

Tourists wishing to sample the finest of Balinese wines at source can arrange a visit to The Cellardoor Bali, in the heart of Sanur.

Hatten Wines shares, “Open daily, our Sanur cellar door offers comparative or sweet lover tasting at the bar with special prices. Drop by or organise a private tasting expense to explore our portfolio of Balinese white, rose, red and sparkling wines.”

For an even more special experience, tourists are welcome to visit the Hatten Wines Vineyard Visitor Centre in North Bali.

Hatten Wines explains, “Set within the grapevines of our Sanggalangit vineyard, our visitors center lies around 15 kilometers east from the seaside resort of Pemumteran.”

Tourists can book a private guide tour of the vineyards and experience firsthand the meticulous processes required to produce award-winning wines.

Hatten Wines shares “a tasting experience includes a guided tour through the vines and a Balinese wine flight through our range of two sparkling, two whites, a rose, a red, and a fortified dessert wine.”

Visitors are also welcome to enjoy the views from the observation deck, which spans through to Bali’s mountain peaks.

It is not only Hatten Wines who are offering unique wine experiences in North Bali. Wira Grape Sejahtera in Patemon Village offers an interactive argo-tourism program for tourists and wine lovers alike.

Cultivating 15 different grape varieties, guests can even pick their own grapes to take away with them. Entry is just IDR 10,000 for adults and IDR 5,000 for children and a kilo of hand-picked grapes is charged at a fair IDR 100,000.

Bali’s drinks industry is booming right now, especially in the alcohol and traditional medicinal space. Not only is the province working to promote the traditional spirit liquor arak, but the traditional health drink jamu has also been given protected status by UNESCO.
