A foreign national with the initials DMDG (aged 56) from the Netherlands has been deported for operating a digital business in Bali.
The Head of the Singaraja Immigration Office Class II, Nanang Mustofa, confirmed that the Dutch man was deported for operating a digital business without a proper visa during his stay in Bunutan Village Abang, Karangasem.
“The Dutch man kept operating his digital business despite knowing it wasn’t allowed under his current visa,” Nanang said on Sunday (23/1).
The authorities received information regarding DMDG’s activity during a regular inspection conducted by Singaraja Immigration Officers. They were informed that DMDG has been making a profit from his digital business by creating websites for his clients during his stay in Karangasem.
Shortly after, officers interviewed DMDG and checked his legal documents. They discovered that DMDG has been staying with his Temporary Resident Card (KITAS), which will expire on December 23rd 2022.
“As a KITAS holder, he wasn’t allowed to operate a business in Bali, so we had to deport him for violating Article 75 Number 1 of the Indonesian Constitution Number 6 about Immigration,” Nanang concluded.
Nanang warned all expats to comply with Indonesia’s regulations during their stay in Bali.

The articles not very clear as to whether his clients are in bali or back in europe. If his business and clients are back in europe and transactions are in europe then i don't see a problem with this. I know its not technically legal but the worlds changing and many countries are starting to adapt to this i.e schemes for digital nomads. If his clients are here in bali then he hasn't got a leg to stand on. A foreign national working without a visa is illegal in almost every country.

@Randy, i agree, for example if you have a income from a pension or properties back in your home country, its legal and tax exempt pretty much everywhere. Running a business back home is a grey area and working remotely for a business back home is illegal. As i understand it you cannot conduct any work activities without a visa. I do suspect we will see changes to the law's around the world in the coming years regarding remote working. As long as there's no business conducted within the host country.

@Steven, exactly the law is ambiguous in all aspects. It's better to check with a tax and an immigration consultant if in doubt.

@Masboy, imagine what actually?? ANYONE REGARDLESS working illegally or out of status in the US could be deported.
What could it be so different in your own backyard...if a foreigner breaks the law and all options have been exhausted, he or she could be deported. You call that a stupid Indonesian law.

@Steph, everyone is working remotely these days. If you are doing business remotely for your own country but not trying to earn money in the host country then it's understandable. But the minute you are doing business in the host country and earning money that's a whole different ball game. You may have to declare your earnings.

@Steph, probably in Europe not in the US. Pay tax for what you earn. Indonesia from what I hear has a treaty on tax agreement between the two countries.

@Randy, I think an indonesian, rolling a business in indonesia, paying tax in indonesia will not have problem to stay in europe for long term and work from there if he want. Nothing wrong with that, not illegal workers neither
