A Man In Bali Arrested For Using Counterfeit Money That He Bought On Facebook

  A 29-year-old man with initials (AW) has been arrested after using counterfeit money to buy cellphones in Jembrana.

 The Head of the Jembrana Police Department, AKBP I Ketut Gede Adi Wibawa confirmed that the suspect was arrested after using counterfeit money that he bought through social media to buy several cell phones in three different locations in Jembrana. “When the suspect was arrested, he admitted that he has bought 4 cellphones from 3 different stores, using the counterfeit money that he got through facebook.” AKBP Wibawa said on Tuesday (24/8).

After the arrest, the suspect admitted that he bought USD 103 (IDR 1,5 million) of counterfeit money for USD 34 (IDR 500,000) from a member on facebook marketplace  that appears to sell modem devices to trick authorities. “The suspect has successfully used the money to buy cellphones in three separate places, Sunday (8/8) in Pendem village, Tuesday (10/8) in Baluk village and the following Sunday (15/8) in Banjar Tengah village area in Jembrana.” AKBP Wibawa added.

Once the suspect managed to buy the cell phones, he planned to sell them to other stores with similar prices to earn more cash. “The suspect did his illegal transaction at night, but our team managed to arrest him before he sold those phones to other people.” AKBP Wibawa concluded. The suspect has been detained along with several pieces of evidence such as a motorbike, 4 cell phones and 51 notes of counterfeit money and will potentially face a 10 years of imprisonment and a USD 700,000 (IDR 10 billion) fine.
