Authorities from Law and Human Rights Ministry plan to relocate inmates from the overcrowded Kerobokan prison to a new building. The current prison had exceeded its capacity by 5 times. The Head of Correctional Division from Bali Law and Human Rights Ministry, Suprapto said that the relocation plan was initiated to improve the quality of the institution while implementing law enforcement in Bali.
“Kerobokan prison has far exceeded its capacity. The prison is now accomodating over 1,500 inmates, while the maximum capacity is supposedly only 300 inmates,” said Suprapto
He admitted that the authority could not refuse new inmates while the crime rates have shown an increase since the pandemic struck Bali.
Suprapto claimed that the development of new prisons in other areas in Bali could stimulate economic activity in that area.
“I give the Narcotics Prison in Bangli for example, the area used to be very quiet, but now there are many shops and houses in the surrounding area since the prison was built,” Suprapto added.
He noted that the new prison will have a maximum capacity of 1,000 inmates inside.
“The current situation of Kerbobokan prison is very inhumane, many of them decided to not wear their shirts due to the high temperature inside the cells. Besides, I think it’s also important to relocate the inmates with the heavy sentences, in order to keep nearby citizens away from their unpredictable behavior,” Suprapto concluded.
