Rising tides struck the southern coastline of Bali on Sunday evening (31/1), significantly impacting Kuta Beach. The strong waves created erosion along the shoreline, causing large trees on the beach to collapse.
The rising tide reached the meeting point between the beach and the main road.
As a precaution, authorities from Balawista remind people to avoid any activity on the beach area during this time.
Authorities signalled yellow flags in several areas cautioning people to maintain a safe distance.
The Head of Observation and Information from Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Agit Setiyoso, explained that the peak of the rainy season will occur at the end of this month.
“We have observed that the stronger wind in most areas of Bali could potentially cause heavy rain from cloud formation,” Setiyoso said.
The extreme weather conditions are projected to cause tidal waves, lightning and even tornadoes. “On the southern Bali coastal area, the waves could reach up to 5 meters. And on the Bali Strait the average wave could reach more than 5 meters.” Setiyoso added.
On Friday (29/1), a coastal incident occurred on a ferry transporting trucks and passengers from Java to Lombok. Turbulent waves caused several trucks to roll sideways inside the ferry.
